First off: NC is fairly insensitive to ignition. If we can ball mill black powder dry, why not NC? The problem is that NC is also very strong and flexible, quite undesirable properties for grinding. So ball milling with lead is probably going to be slow, and with heavy contamination. Brass or copper media (also safe for BP) might work better.

Extremely hard, lead ball media for ball milling black powder and individual chemicals. If you are making black powder, you have to use nonsparking grinding media. Lead is nonsparking and is probably the safest thing to use for making BP. Pure lead balls are very soft and will literally grind themselves down to nothing.

I thought I would try it out as a ball mill, so I cast up a large batch of .575" (58 cal) hard round lead balls. The trouble is that 30 pounds of lead balls only fills it to about 1/3 full.
