Coal balls, pockets of plant debris that were preserved as fossils and not converted to coal, are sometimes found within the coal layers. Multiple transgressions and regressions of the Pennsylvanian seas across the continent can be seen in the rocks, and even counted, because they leave a telltale sequence of layers.
WhatsApp: +86 18203695377Inconsistencies between the fossil record and lignin/fungalbased explanations for Paleozoic coal abundance extend more broadly than documented fossil specimens of fungal rots. Carboniferous peat permineralizations (coal balls) generally contain low shoot:root ratios, suggesting decay of massive amounts of aerial plant tissue (34, 44, 80).

After it dries, peel the acetate off of the rock and you'll have a thin section of the fossils inside the coal ball. One coal can make hundreds of peels. I've attached a link with some pictures and more references.
WhatsApp: +86 18203695377From the perspective of Phanerozoic time, coal balls are rare, apparently limited to a 24 interval (323299 Ma) in the Pennsylvanian and earliest within this interval, coal balls occur in many coals. WhatsApp: +86 18203695377A modification of this technique was published in 1956 [Joy et al. ; see also Galtier and Phillips ] that affected how coalball plants were studied and, at the same time, may have decreased the number of discoveries of fossil fungi in coal balls. In this modification, preformed sheets of cellulose acetate were used to make peels.
